Don't Eat Pete!!

If you are looking for the funnest, simplest family game ever, Don't Eat Pete is it. I remember playing it as a kid with my family, and loved it. Then about a week ago my brother came over with his family, and we played it. I just about died watching the kid's faces during the game.

How to Play:

1. Get a game board. You can print the one off my blog, or make your own. It's basically a piece of paper with 9 squares (3 squares x 3 squares). Each little square has a number 1-9. Our board growing up had little M&M people on them, colored with markers and then laminated.

2. Place an M&M on each square.

3. Send one person out of the room.

4. As a group pick a square, but keep it a secret from the person out of the room. This square will be Pete.

5. Call the person back in.

6. That person than gets to pick one M&M at a time, but as soon as they pick up Pete, everyone yells, "Don't Eat Pete!" Their turn is over and they get to enjoy the M&Ms they collected, but not Pete! (They can eat Pete, if he is the last one on the board!!!)

My First Salem Senior Portraits!

Yes, I specialize in maternity, newborn and children's portraiture, and yes I still photograph high school seniors and families. I started my business photography families and high school seniors, and while I don't advertise for those sessions anymore, I still love them, especially when they involve big, beautiful tutus! I had alot of fun with Vanessa. We started out in the studio, and I love how they turned out! I was able to try out my new backdrops that I created.

Later we headed out to downtown Salem. I will be posting some previews of that session a little later, so keep your eye out for them.

Memorial Day in Salem

While I wouldn't yet consider it a family tradition, last Memorial Day we visited a military cemetery in Portland to leave flowers for some of Joe's family there. Then this Memorial Day we took the short walk to the Salem Pioneer Cemetery near our home. I love seeing all the American flags on display.

I am very grateful for all of our military servicemen and women and their families. Because of their sacrifices, I am able to raise my daughters in a country that has allowed them so many freedoms. Thank you to all who have or are currently serving, and a special thanks for all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Dinner Time? Macaroni and Cheese, please.

Okay, so as part of my new blog, am I going to be sharing our family's favorite recipes. My girls LOVE macaroni and cheese, and kept begging me to make it. The only mac and cheese that I ever had growing up came from a box. But because the ingredient list is a mile long (really, shouldn't it just be mac....and cheese?) I refuse to make it for my kids. I know that it is crazy cheap, and you can probably get a year supply for free if you hit the right sale, and double coupon and all that, but tell me, what is that orange powder stuff you put in it? Exactly, nobody knows. So I tried my hand at making my own mac and cheese and it was a hit! So here it is:

Macaroni and Cheese

Ingredients:

8 oz. Large Macaroni Noodles
1/4 c. butter
a few cloves of garlic minced
1/4 c. flour
salt and pepper
2 c. milk
1/2 ts. mustard
2 1/2 c. cheese (whatever is in the fridge at the time, Colby Jack, Gouda, Cheddar, or even a little swiss cheese, usually a mix, with more Jack cheese)
Ham, chopped (I never measure this kind of stuff, just throw in what you want)
Parmesan Cheese
Bread Crumbs (we use Panko, because they are a little healthier, but whatever you have, or even ritz crackers)

Directions:

1. Cook pasta, and drain.
2. Melt cheese in medium saucepan. Add garlic, saute for 30 seconds. Whisk in flour, salt and pepper. Cook until smooth. Slowly add milk. Bring to a boil for 1 minute. Add mustard and cheese (not Parmesan). Stir until melted. Remove from heat, add in pasta and ham. Pour into a baking dish. Sprinkle with Breadcrumbs and Parmesan. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Enjoy!

Are we there yet??

There are some things that are universal to all mothers; you never get enough sleep, and you cringe every time your child says, "Are we there yet?" "No, sweetie, if we were there, I wouldn't still be driving, now would I?"Of course, all of this would be said in the sweetest tone I could muster, while gritting my teeth. Maybe it's my kids that don't get that logic, or maybe they just love driving their mother crazy (if they are anything like me, it would be the latter. I can almost hear my mom's voice saying, one day Annie, you are going to have a daughter just like you!).
Well, right now I feel like the one who keeps saying, "Are we there yet?"
Joe (my hubby), the girls (also know as my chica, chicas/daughters), and I moved to Salem, Oregon last December. As a result of the move, I closed down my studio in Canby, and started making plans for my new studio in Salem. I've been working really hard the last five months getting my studio together for my re-opening!! Okay, I've mostly played with my girls for the first four months, but for the last month, I've been working really hard getting ready for the reopening. I am starting fresh, with an all new website, blog, products, props, backdrops, pretty much everything. Everyday it seems I get one make backdrop finished (did I mention I am creating alot of them myself?), or another album designed for my studio samples. And everyday I keep asking myself, Am I there yet?
Well the end is almost in sight, and I can't tell you how excited I am. To kick off my whole new studio, I am going to be changing my blog up bit. My blog has always been used as a way to give my clients a sneak peek at their photos, but I have always wanted it to be more than that. I want to share more of my life, my business, and things that matter to other moms just like me, so stay tuned, it's going to be awesome!

As a family, we moved from Canby to Salem, Oregon at the end of 2010. A month after the move, I made the tough decision to close my studio and take a few months off. Well it's been a few months now, and while I my studio has been closed, I have been working hard revamping my whole new studio with new props, and backdrops, along with some great new products and a new website! While I am not quite done (though I should be fully up and running this coming week!!!!) I was able to do my first newborn session at my new place here in Salem. These boys are incredibly handsome, and I am so glad their mom was able to bring them in, so I could try out my new space. In a few days, I will be officially open, and ready for more kids and babies!

I had the Caspers out to the studio this weekend for some beautiful outdoor fall family portraits.I love the brown, pink and demin colors that they chose. Doesn't it look amazing with the pink fall leaves? This family is so adorable, and look at all those curly haired kids!!

Earlier that week I had the opportunity to photograph their youngest child's one year photos. She is quite the climber. It's always fun watching kids once the become big enough to start exploring the world.

Here is the adorable baby Rita! Every session I try to do something new, whether it be a different pose, prop, lighting technique, or anything. It keeps it interesting and challenging for me, as well as helping me stay creative. This session my new challenge was the baby sling in the last photo and I love how it turned out (don't worry, mommy's hand were right there with baby but have since been photoshopped out). Also we turned up the heat real high in the studio, and warmed up props before placing her in them, as a result we have a beautiful sleeping baby throughout the whole session. She is such a doll, and I am extra lucky because she's my little niece!!

This morning I had a session with three little siblings. They were so goofy and fun and remind me why I love my job! There were alot of cute portraits, but I really liked the close up head shots of each of the kids. They are such classic portraits that are never going to go out of style. And the last one, I can just see their mom looking at it years from now thinking, "Were they ever that little?" Super cute!!

Baby Linnea is back for her 4 months portraits! She has gotten so big since her newborn session. I am a sucker for close up, non-smiling photos like the first two. With my second daughter, photos with big grins always seemed so foreign, because she glared ALL the time, and I would barely recognize her when she smiled for photos. Since then I have come to appreciate and love the photos that show another side of who they are. And look at Linnea's eyes, they are gorgeous!!!

Last week I participated for the first time ever in an official print competition. I was very nervous, but overall I am proud of how I did. Since deciding that I was going to enter the competition I have worked harder than ever on getting the "perfect" images. Even since I turned these four images in, I feel my work has improved. I can't wait till next year's competition!! All of my prints scored in the above average category.

My husband has commented about some of the baby shots I have done that don't look very safe. I just want to reassure all the moms out there (and dads too) that we are very careful when it comes to babies, especially newborns. Many of the photos originally had a parents arm in the photo making sure the babies don't roll or get hurt, but have since been taken out of the photos. Now everyone can sleep peacefully tonight.

Cherice is about to have a second little baby girl! I am so excited for her, but I am kind of partial to little sisters because of my two little ones. Cherice and her family we're some of my very first clients after I moved back to Oregon. I didn't even have my studio yet. I photographed Preslee earlier, but we really wanted to get dad in the photos so she came back in! I love the photo with her dad laying down because you can just tell how happy he is to have this little baby in his life, plus it shows off a tattoo with their family name. Preslee's family just came in a few weeks ago for maternity portraits and good thing they came in when they did, because she was born very shortly after that. She was such a calm baby and a joy to work with. Every session I go into I try a do at least one thing new and different to help me push myself to be more creative and have fun. Mom vs. Child

I took on my two most challenging clients this week...my children. I did them on two different days because I am just not brave enough to photography them both together without any help. My normal tricks just bore them, so I had to try new things with both of them.

Bribery worked great with Hailey. I told her she could pick out her last outfit if she would wear and do whatever I told her. I also told her she looked like Taylor Swift in the outfits I choose for her. That brought a big smile.

The trick with Brooklyn was pretty simple, let her ripe apart a flower. At first she was very hesitant to do it, but with a little encouragement she had alot of fun.

Like a typical Oregon fall day, it was overcast and sprinkling during the whole session. I was just waiting for it to start pouring, but we lucked out. We were very efficient, and were able to do the session in record time (senior guys take alot less time changing clothes than the girls do). These family portraits we're extra special because the Hill family's oldest son is heading off to college. I had taken his senior portraits earlier in the year and then they asked me to come back and photograph their family on the dock near their home. It's the last time the kids will all be.... well, kids. I love the top photograph with them all in a line on the dock. Even though it's not your tradition portrait I love seeing the connection between the family members and everyone laughing.

Lexie was my last senior for the school year. We did half of the session at my house. I rarely photograph there and it was my first senior session there (unless I count my little sister's senior session I did when I was still in school). We got so many good ones out in the fields. I may just have to do more sessions here in the future. She was such a natural. Then we went over to Aurora to get the more urban look. What a beautiful girl.

I have known the Langford family for quite a while. I even used to babysit the boys when they were little. They aren't little anymore, all the boys are taller than me now (not that that's a big accomplishment). It was alot of fun during their session. When I was out photographing my last senior session of the year with a girl named Lexi (who's pictures I haven't posted yet but I will real soon.) we walked past an antique store in Aurora and I saw this beautiful red chair that I knew I just had to have. So after the session I went back and bought it!!

I was able to use it for the first time this week while photographing my handsome little nephew (my same nephew that my daughter tells everyone she is going to marry some day). While you can't see the red chair a ton in these pictures it was very fun to pull it out in some fields by my studio (thank you Michelle for letting us use your property!) I definitely want to try that again.

You will have two backdrops to choose from; our textured brown or white. Our brown backdrop offers a richer and more formal portrait. Some clothing that would look great are darker colors, and earth tones. Keep it simple with solids. Our white backdrop is a little funner and more modern. Bright colors look great, or even light colors.

We did the Kersey family session at their home. They had some of the most beautiful property I have seen. Now I am not a country girl, but as we left I turned to my husband who assisted me that session, and told him I could live out in the country if I had a place like this. Not only did they have a great place, but they are such a beautiful family. I was glad that we could capture their rodeo lifestyle!

I do have to say that one of my favorite parts of the my job is seeing
how  customers react to their photographs. It just reminds me

Holiday Gatherings

This is such a great time of year with the Holidays coming up. It also a very special time for families when people gather from all over to be together. I know my siblings are spread all across the United States and it's not that often we can all get together at the same time. When that happens it is such a great opportunity to get that family portrait.

This holiday season I will be offering a very limited number of session on Christmas Eve and Day, and Thanksgiving and the days surrounding them. There is a special session fee for those days. If you are interested please contact me as soon as possible to reserve your session.
